Candles create a warm, inviting atmosphere, but safety is key. With candle use on the rise, so too are fire-related incidents. In 2003 alone, 1,791 house fires were caused by candles, resulting in 22 deaths and over 650 injuries. As candle sales have increased by 50% in recent years, it’s essential to follow safety guidelines.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Candle Safety

✅ Place on a heat-resistant surface – Avoid flammable surfaces like TVs or plastic materials. ✅ Use a proper holder – Candles should stand upright and be stable to prevent tipping.
✅ Keep away from curtains and fabrics – Ensure they are positioned away from anything that can catch fire. ✅ Allow space above – Avoid placing candles under shelves; leave at least 1 metre (3 feet) clearance. ✅ Be mindful of hair & clothing – Avoid leaning over lit candles to prevent accidental fires. ✅ Keep out of reach of children & pets – Ensure they are placed safely away from little hands and paws. ✅ Space them apart – Maintain at least 10cm (4 inches) between burning candles. ✅ Extinguish before moving – Never move a burning candle; always put it out first. ✅ Never leave candles unattended – Extinguish all flames before leaving a room or going to sleep. ✅ Use a snuffer – Blowing out candles can send sparks and hot wax flying. A snuffer or spoon is a safer option. ✅ Double-check they’re out – Ensure the wick has stopped smouldering to prevent re-ignition.
