It identifies a mechanism and potential exposure under the studied conditions. It does not prove that every wax melt causes illness during ordinary household use. The sensible conclusion is narrower: an electric warmer avoids a burning wick, but scented melts can still change indoor air chemistry. The evidence also does not justify turning the result into a simple soy-versus-paraffin verdict. Fragrance chemistry was central to the observed particle formation. The relevant question is not only what wax was used, but which volatile compounds entered the room, how much was released and what conditions were present.
What nanoparticle research changes
The nanoparticle evidence means “generally low-risk” is more defensible than “completely safe.” Some fragrance ingredients are terpenes. When certain terpenes enter indoor air, they can react with ozone and create oxidation products with lower volatility.
