Who are Matty’s.

Matty’s Candles are a manufacturer of Scented Candles and Melts. We are a registered Limited Company with full Liability Insurance and Matty’s is a registered trademark in England and Wales.

We operate by selling at a wholesale price to self employed resellers. We are not a pyramid company. The characteristics are very different. A pyramid company will use a business model that manufacturers their product but then sells at a profit to a tiered management system and all those beneath will get commission based on how many people are in their team.

Matty’s doesn’t sell into multiple managers, we sell direct to the reseller, that way by removing a management system you buy at a wholesalers price. You therefore are the wholesaler, selling at a retail price to the customer.

We don’t have protected areas but we actively try and ensure those resellers that are ordering regularly don’t have an influx of new resellers that would dilute their business. Equally if we have resellers that join and don’t order after a month we will resume you back to a regular customer, which of course we are delighted with both. Matty’s partner is called Lewis and they became frustrated that the market only offered Paraffin, which as you know soots and gives off some pretty nasty toxins. They started their business in 2018 but incorporated their business as a Limited Co in June 2019. Their main product being the Coconut and Rapeseed candle.  As it is a  vegetable wax it has many benefits over paraffin and Soy.  It melts at a lower temperature so the scent lasts longer. It doesn’t soot like paraffin. You don’t get a headache when burning or melting. Soy is, and always has been GMO. Or Genetically modified as you may know. This now means that many forests are designated as Soy Crop fields to meet demand. This in turn contributes to deforestation. As a progressive candle company they then moved to their own blend of wax to be sustainable. Mixing the highly purified soft wax from the flesh of the coconut and blending in the rapeseed oil to harden mean’t they now had a sustainable wax alternative to Soy. Coconut Fields stay as fields, often ran by small independent farmers, coconuts are plentyful worldwide and therefore sustainable.

Rapeseed oil from the rapeseed fields of the UK and Europe also sustainable governed by strict EU Guidelines. Even better news was that it was made illegal to use bee harming pesticides on Rapeseed in the UK and Europe a couple of years ago. Traditionally coconut wax is very expensive, and still is, however Matty’s purchase by the TON so they are able to compete aggressively with their prices.

About our Products

Candles

Our candles are made from the flesh of the Coconut and Rapeseed oil producing a superior candle with a smooth top and an excellent scethrow. Because of its low melting point the scent will last a lot longer than paraffin and soy. This isn’t a baseless claim, the lower the melting point of a product the longer the scent will last. Each Candle is poured into an aluminium tin which we urge you to recycle or upcycle. They make great planters. The cotton wick is free from lead and zinc. It is anchored to the base of the tin with a steel washer. Just like the ones you find at your DIY store. This is so the wick won’t float if you leave it burning by accident. We recommend burning for 2 hours and then blowing out. Don’t snuff the wick or use the lid as this will infuse carbon into the wax which will alter the scent. Candles will give off slightly less scent than melting alone, this is because you are burning the product with a flame as opposed to melting. The labels are bleach free and the air tight lid keeps the product as good as new months later. The net weight of the wax is about 187g and the total weight of the tin is about 250g. The whole process is done by hand. The UK market is very important to us, the tins are made in Hull, the wicks and oils come from Scotland and the labels from a Midlands based company and Ireland.

Melts

Just like our candle wax, the melts use Coconut and Rapeseed oil. After the melts have cured and hardened we place them into a very thin plastic sleeve which is only 30 microns thick and bio degrades in landfill without light and heat. And yes we have the certification to prove it. A company in Ilkeston Nottingham produces these sleeves for us which are normally used to pack and store food like rice and pasta. The cardboard sleeves are self sealing, recycled and bleach free and again made by another company in Ilkeston Nottingham. The labels are of course bleach free. These melts can be used in both tlight burners and electric burners. Some scents are stronger than others, some will mask food, some will not. Some people have a 100% scent detection, some will not be able to smell anything with limonene. Just like taste, we are all different.

The wax is 100% bio degradable as it is from a plant. Don’t be fooled by die hard paraffin users as even though the National Candle Association suggests that paraffin wax is bio degradable. This is misleading because even plutonium becomes ineffective after time! It is the speed at which the chemicals become safe. Paraffin uses petrol, Coconut and Rapeseed are vegetables.

Fragrance Composition and CLP

All of Mattys Candles are hand made with Coconut and Rapeseed waxand 10% fragrance oil. We are fully insured and comply with the EU Directive of CLP. (Classification, Labelling & Packaging) There is increasing research to suggest that there are links between the burning of Paraffin Based candles and headaches/breathing problems. Our Wax is suitable for Vegans.

Scent Strength

You will notice that our Candles and Melt Scents are stronger than most other Paraffin based products you have tried, this is because you are not heating up a by product of petrol.

Burning Time

How long should we burn each candle for?

Whilst the total burn time is up to 40 hours, we recommend using them in 2 hours bursts. The candle burn turns the wax to liquid which will continue to scent your room and act like a melt bar, even when the flame is extinguished.

How long do the melts last for?

You will always get at least 8 hours worth of scent from two small chunks of melt bar. Scent strength does vary, Champers and Strawberry is quite subtle whereas lavender and citrus based fragrance is stronger.

What happens if I leave the candle burning?

You should never leave any candle burning unattended as you risk a fire in your home. Wind, pets and children are unpredictable! If the tin is fully in its liquid state you risk the wick tipping. Even though we support it with a steel washer it still has a small chance of tipping.

How do I extinguish the flame?

Blow it gently, DO NOT use the lid to snuff. If you do this the smoke from the wick will infuse the wax and spoil the scent.

Trouble Shooting

The customer said the wick has disappeared into the wax? The only way this could of happened is the wick tipped by not following the above advice.

My wax smells funny?  Check the underneath of the lid, usually it is charred because again the customer has not followed the above advice and used the lid to snuff.

When using the melt bars can I add water to make them last longer? No definitely not. It will boil and spit and act like a volcano, literally. Remember the chip pan fires in the 70’s when it was made worse by throwing water onto it? Yep same happens with hot wax.
