Hello, fellow fragrance lover! If you’re on a mission to make your home smell absolutely incredible, you’ve come to the right place. We’re Matt and Cat, the founders of Mattys, and we live and breathe home fragrance. We know that navigating the world of wax melts can be a bit overwhelming. What makes one melt ‘better’ than another? How do you find scents that actually last? And what’s the deal with soy versus paraffin wax?
That’s why we’ve put together this ultimate guide to finding the best wax melts in the UK. We’re going to pull back the curtain on the wax melt industry, sharing our expert insights to help you choose products that are safer, stronger, and more sustainable. Forget weak scents that fade in an hour; it’s time to discover the true power of high-quality home fragrance.
Mattys Wax Melts vs. The Rest: A Quick Comparison
To get started, let’s look at what sets a premium, hand-poured wax melt apart from the mass-produced options you might find on the high street. It all comes down to the details.
| Feature | Mattys Wax Melts | Typical High Street Melts | | :— | :— | :— | | Wax Type | 100% Natural Soy Wax | Paraffin or Para-Soy Blend | | Fragrance Load | Maximum Load (8-10%) | Variable (Often 3-6%) | | Scent Performance | Strong, complex & room-filling | Often weak or fades quickly | | Scent Time Per Cube | 12-16 hours | 6-8 hours | | Eco-Friendliness | Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Biodegradable | Petroleum-based, Not Biodegradable | | Packaging | Recyclable & Plastic-Free | Often includes single-use plastic | | Origin | Hand-poured in the UK | Often mass-produced overseas |
As you can see, not all wax melts are created equal. Let’s dive deeper into what these differences really mean for you and your home.
What Truly Makes a Wax Melt ‘The Best’?
When we started Mattys, we tested countless combinations of wax, fragrance oils, and temperatures. We learned that creating the ‘best’ wax melt isn’t about a single factor—it’s about the synergy of several key elements. Here’s what you should be looking for.
H3: The Foundation: Wax Type (Soy vs. Paraffin)
The wax is the heart of your melt. It carries the fragrance and determines the quality of the melt pool and the cleanliness of the burn.
* Soy Wax (Our Choice): We exclusively use 100% natural soy wax. Why? It’s a renewable resource derived from soybeans, making it biodegradable and much better for the environment. Soy wax has a lower melting point, which means it releases fragrance more gradually and for a longer period. This creates a beautiful, consistent scent experience rather than a short, overpowering blast. It’s also known for a cleaner release, producing significantly less soot than paraffin.
* Paraffin Wax: This is the most common wax used in cheaper, mass-market candles and melts. It’s a byproduct of the petroleum refining industry, making it a non-renewable resource. While it’s known for holding strong scents and colours, it can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when melted. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some VOCs can have short- and long-term adverse health effects [1]. While the amount from a single wax melt is small, we believe in choosing the cleanest possible ingredients for your home.
* Beeswax & Coconut Wax: These are also excellent natural alternatives, but they come with their own challenges. Beeswax isn’t vegan, and both are typically more expensive, which drives up the cost for you, the customer. We’ve found that soy wax offers the perfect balance of performance, sustainability, and value.

H3: The Soul of the Scent: Fragrance Load & Scent Throw
This is where the magic happens! The strength and quality of your wax melt’s aroma depend on two things: fragrance load and scent throw.
Fragrance Load: This refers to the percentage of fragrance oil mixed into the wax. Most waxes can only hold a certain amount before the oil starts to separate. We use a premium soy wax that allows us to incorporate the maximum possible fragrance load—typically between 8% and 10%. Many commercial brands use a much lower load (around 3-6%) to cut costs, which is why their scents can be disappointingly weak.
Scent Throw: This is the term for how well a fragrance circulates and fills a room. It’s divided into two types: * Cold Throw: How the melt smells in its packaging. This can be deceptive! * Hot Throw: How the melt smells when it’s warmed. This is the true test of quality.
A great hot throw is the result of using high-quality fragrance oils, the correct wax type, and pouring at the perfect temperature. We’ve spent years perfecting our process to ensure every one of our melts delivers an exceptional hot throw that fills an average-sized room (around 15-20 square metres) within 20-30 minutes.
H3: The Long Game: Burn Time & Value For Money
It might be tempting to grab the cheapest wax melt on the shelf, but it’s often a false economy. A low-quality melt might cost less upfront, but you’ll burn through it twice as fast.
Our 80g snap bars are divided into 10 cubes. We’ve rigorously tested our melts and found that a single cube provides between 12 and 16 hours of strong fragrance. That means one of our bars delivers up to 160 hours of beautiful scent.
Compare that to a typical melt where a cube might last only 6-8 hours. You’d need two of their bars to get the same fragrance time as one of ours. When you’re looking for the best wax melts in the UK, always check the estimated fragrance time to ensure you’re getting real value.
H3: The Conscientious Choice: Eco-Friendliness & Sustainability
We believe that enjoying home fragrance shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet. From our ingredients to our packaging, we’ve made conscious choices to minimise our environmental impact.
* Vegan & Cruelty-Free: Our soy wax and fragrance oils are never tested on animals and contain no animal products. * Biodegradable Wax: Natural soy wax breaks down safely in the environment. * Plastic-Free Packaging: Our melts come in glassine bags, which are recyclable and biodegradable. We ship all our orders in cardboard boxes with paper tape and recyclable filling.
This commitment to sustainability is a core part of our identity and a key reason why customers choose us when looking for ethical home fragrance.

How to Get the Most From Your Wax Melts: Our Expert Tips
Using a wax melt is simple, but a few pro tips can elevate your experience from good to amazing. As fragrance experts, we’ve learned a thing or two about maximising scent performance.
H3: Choosing the Right Wax Warmer
The type of warmer you use has a huge impact on your scent throw. There are two main types:
* Electric Warmers: These are fantastic for a gentle, consistent scent release. They use a small bulb or a heated plate to melt the wax. We recommend using a warmer with at least a 40-watt bulb. Lower wattage warmers may not get hot enough to release the full fragrance profile from high-quality soy wax. * Tealight Warmers: These traditional warmers use the flame from an unscented 4-hour tealight to melt the wax. They tend to get hotter than electric warmers, which can produce a very strong initial burst of fragrance. Just be sure the distance between the flame and the dish is at least 10cm to prevent the wax from getting too hot, which can burn off the fragrance oil too quickly.
H3: The Perfect Melt-to-Room-Size Ratio
Don’t be afraid to experiment! The amount of wax you use should depend on your room size and personal preference.
* Small Rooms (Bathrooms, Offices): One cube of a Mattys melt is usually plenty. * Medium Rooms (Bedrooms, Kitchens): Start with one cube and add a second if you want a more intense experience. * Large/Open-Plan Areas (Living Rooms): We recommend using two cubes, or even placing two warmers at opposite ends of the space for a truly immersive fragrance.
H3: How to Clean Your Warmer and Change Scents
This is the question we get asked most often! Changing your scent is easy, and there are a few mess-free methods:
1. The Cotton Ball Method: Once you’re finished with a scent, simply drop two or three cotton balls into the melted wax. They will soak it all up in seconds. You can then wipe the dish clean with a paper towel and you’re ready for your next fragrance. 2. The Solidify & Pop Method: Let the wax cool and completely solidify in the warmer dish. Then, turn the warmer back on for just 30-60 seconds. This is just enough to melt the very bottom layer of the wax, allowing you to slide the solid puck of wax out in one clean piece. 3. The Freezer Method: If your warmer dish is removable, you can place it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax will shrink as it gets cold, allowing it to pop right out.
We recommend changing your wax when you can no longer smell it, which for our melts will be after about 12-16 hours of use per cube.
